Thank you to Netgalley and Inkyard press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

Divya Sharma is a queen. Or she is when she’s playing Reclaim the Sun, the year’s hottest online game. Divya—better known as popular streaming gamer D1V—regularly leads her #AngstArmada on quests through the game’s vast and gorgeous virtual universe. But for Divya, this is more than just a game. Out in the real world, she’s trading her rising-star status for sponsorships to help her struggling single mom pay the rent.

Gaming is basically Aaron Jericho’s entire life. Much to his mother’s frustration, Aaron has zero interest in becoming a doctor like her, and spends his free time writing games for a local developer. At least he can escape into Reclaim the Sun—and with a trillion worlds to explore, disappearing should be easy. But to his surprise, he somehow ends up on the same remote planet as celebrity gamer D1V.

At home, Divya and Aaron grapple with their problems alone, but in the game, they have each other to face infinite new worlds…and the growing legion of trolls populating them. Soon the virtual harassment seeps into reality when a group called the Vox Populi begin launching real-world doxxing campaigns, threatening Aaron’s dreams and Divya’s actual life. The online trolls think they can drive her out of the game, but everything and everyone Divya cares about is on the line…

And she isn’t going down without a fight.

Omg yall. This book. It’s my first 5 star read of the year and so deserving of every single star it gets. Don’t Read the Comments is a great look at the sexist nature of the video gaming community. That just because you are a female, you automatically aren’t as good as a male. Like, honestly. What do genitals have to do with gaming skill? NOTHING.

I’ve been gaming since I was 15. I started with Halo online, then went to World of Warcraft. I’ve tried various other MMO’s, FPS’s, everything. And no matter how good I am, if I speak, I’m either just trying to find a boyfriend or I’m a boy who hasn’t hit puberty yet. It’s so annoying, so I felt what D1V did. I knew how it was – people saying nasty things about you because they think you don’t belong. It was so nice to have that rep. To have a strong, GOOD female gamer, who didn’t let them see her break. She was so brave and so strong. Even when she got doxxed. If you don’t know about doxxing, check this out. It happened to a lot of females in the gaming/geek world and it it SO.SCARY.

Okay, now you see why the books means so much to me. I imagine it will mean a lot to the female gaming community who are also readers. Let’s get into this book review, shall we?

I first featured this book on my First Impressions Friday post. I read the first chapter and was immediately hooked. I was so interested in Divya, or D1V as she is known online. I immediately felt a kinship with her and her best friend, Rebekah. They were part of the streaming community, which is something I so desperately wanted to do back in the day.

In the next chapter you meet Aaron, a casual gamer who also plays Reclaim the Sun. The descriptions of the game make it sound like No Man’s Sky. Which I immediately had to play. I’ve logged three hours since finishing the book. Anyway…

A doxxing group attacks D1V and her armada of followers. She has to start over in game. She happens to meet Aaron when grinding to level back up. They end up playing together a lot, growing a friendship, then something more.

The romance was definitely in the background of this book. The main focus was D1V and Rebekah and how they have been attacked over and over. Both physically, verbally, and mentally. I think a lot of people don’t understand what it’s like to be in their position until they’ve been there. No, I’ve never been physically attacked, but I have been verbally and mentally.

There were so many great references in this book. All kinds of games, gamer news sites, and pop culture. I think I highlighted about 10 of them! It was so fun to read! The dual POV was so fun, too. I loved getting both sides of the friendship and romance.

I feel like I just rambled at the beginning of this, but this book is so important to me. I was so fortunate to get an ARC. I would recommend this to anyone in the gaming community or who loves geeky things!

There’s also an amazing pre-order incentive going on! Check it out here!

WWW Wednesday!

What did I just finish reading?

Grey by EL James

My review is posted here. Safe to say the first book of 2020 was long and disappointing.

I’m a Therapist and my Patient is Going to be the Next School Shooter by Dr. Harper

The title is a mouthful but a much better book. I thought this was a true story – it isn’t – but it was so entertaining.

What am I currently reading?

The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros

This started off iffy, but once the mystery picked up I haven’t been able to put it down.

Call Me God by Jim Clemente

Trying out nonfic audios again this year and I’m really enjoying this one! It’s the story of the DC Sniper. I am loving all the FIB Profilers in this!

What am I reading next?

Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith

This is an ARC I received that is releasing on Jan 28! I love that it features an online game and streamers!

What is your WWW Wednesday? Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? Let’s get to know each other in the comments!

Grey Review

  • Title: Grey
  • Author: EL James
  • Publisher: Vintage
  • Publish Date: June 18, 2015
  • Book Form: Ebook
  • Pages: 576
  • Genre: Romance, Erotica
  • Dates Read: Dec 31, 2019 – Jan 5, 2020
  • Rating: ★★★

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

– Goodreads

Grey was another book that I kept from my Down the TBR posts. It’s the second one I have read, and the second one I have not been impressed with. So right now I’m 0/2 and planning to read a third, Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen, this month. I hope that one will be better!

I kept Grey because when the 50 Shades books came out, I enjoyed them. I loved being part of the hype of a hot new series. I know everyone wanted to know what was going on in Grey’s mind. Now that I know, I wish I didn’t. However, this book may be fun to read alongside 50 Shades. I think it would be cool to compare scenes and see it from both Grey and Ana’s points of view.

So back in the day, I thought Grey was hot shit. I now see again that my tastes have changed. Physically, sure, he’s probably attractive. But personality wise? Nah fam. He’s so controlling and stalker-ish. A lot of the thoughts he had about Ana and their relationship had me cringing and thinking, ‘who is this guy?! Like, just because you have money doesn’t mean you can talk/think that way!’

The first half of this book seemed to drag on forever. It was like I couldn’t get into it and I was just mad at everything Grey was. After the 50% park it picked up and I enjoyed it a lot more. I loved the emails between Grey and Ana. Honestly, if the whole book was just that, I would have loved it. I also liked seeing the flashbacks from Grey’s childhood. They didn’t really make me realize why he is the way he is, I just thought they were interesting.

This was also my first book of 2020, and it’s safe to say I was disappointed. It took me forever to read – six days! I was mad at Grey for 80% of the book. I wanted to slap Ana – and not in the way Grey does – and ask her what she is thinking being with him?!

Unfortunately, I won’t be recommending this book. Even though I loved the emails and flashbacks, it just wasn’t enough to redeem it.

Have you read Grey? What were your thoughts? Let me know in the comments!

– Goodreads

Oooooo-weeee. This was my first Taboo Treat. I picked this one because K. Webster had been recommended to me by my friend, Jayce. I saw this one on kindle unlimited, noticed there was a doctor in it and BAM! I got it and immediately started reading. Little did I know, this is actually the last of the Taboo Treats series. Luckily, they can all be read as stand-alones, but you get nifty little cameos from characters in the other books!

Another thing I thought of after learning this tid bit, was man. These people all live in the same town – this is one freaky place! haha, I kid. But it did make me giggle.

Now, on to the book review! I loved this book. It was a quick, steamy read. Dr. Venable – or Dr. Dan as Lauren calls him – keeps having Lauren come into the ER. She’ll get patched up and leave without a complete work up. Dr. Dan is concerned – but mostly cause he thinks Lauren is super attractive. Never mind the fact that she is 18 and he is in his 30s. There’s part of the taboo! Also, doctor-patient relationships of the physical kind are very frowned upon. But who hasn’t fantasized about a hot doctor they had?

So Dr. Dan tracks Lauren down. She finds reasons to go to the ER. Things progress and get physical. Then emotional. He loves her sass and she loves his body and the way he treats her.

Of course, this book has a HEA. You find out why Lauren keeps going to the ER. The ending was super sweet. I usually give romances a 3 star because they’re usually just -eh. Another romance. This was not the case. Dr. Dan got a whole 4 stars from me.

This was a great first endeavor into K. Webster’s world and I can’t wait to jump back in!

Have you read Dr. Dan or any of K. Webster’s other works? What would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below!

Down the TBR Part 6!

I cannot believe another week has gone by! My whole week was messed up. Honestly, it’s been that way for about 3 weeks thanks to the Holidays. But this week I will get back into the normal routine and start working toward all of the goals I have set!

We are starting the TBR off at 1959. I did the opposite of what I was supposed to do and added four books to my TBR this week.

Don’t Look Back by Amanda Quick

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Seems like a weird mix of paranormal and regency romance with crime involved? I don’t know. Seems like a lot.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

The Calhouns by Nora Roberts

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: A 3-in-1 book of romances about sisters who live in a mansion on top of a hill.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete. There wasn’t enough in any of the stories to keep me interested.

Chill Factor by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Someone is abducting women. MC may hit him with her car then be forced to ride out a blizzard with him. I’m into it.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Lethal by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Man accused of murder shows up on woman’s door step claiming she has something the FBI wants and they need to run. Eh. Not really my thing.

Where There’s Smoke by Sandra Brown

The Things We do for Love by Kristin Hannah

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Chick Lit about a mother and daughter’s love and bond. I think my mom would like it, but it’s too adult chick-y for me.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

The Proposal by Mary Balogh

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Regency romance involving a widow and war hero. I can get behind that.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Wow! Okay, by TBR is ending at 1952! Getting so close to being under 1900! I deleted 7, which I think may be my most yet! All of my keeps honestly surprised me, especially the Danielle Steel. If it didn’t have a doctor as an MC, I probably would have deleted it. I’m a sucker for doctors and nurses in books! I had a lot of Sandra Brown, which I know my mom really likes. I feel like she would like all of these books. It’s so crazy to see how much my tastes have changed!

Reading goals of 2020!

Happy New Year everyone! I was going to do a WWW Wednesday post, but decided I will just share my 2020 reading goals with yall instead! I’ll still include a little summary about what I’m reading, in case anyone in curious.

Okay, so let’s get the WWW portion done!

  • What I just finished reading: Tweet Cute by Emma Lord. Omg, so I was so excited to get invited to this blog tour. The book was adorable and a great way to end the year! Look for my blog tour post on Jan 22!
  • What I am reading now: Grey by EL James. This was one of the books off my TBR list! The Libby hold came in early so this will be the first book of the year!
  • What I am reading next: The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros and Cub by Cynthia L Copeland. I have a blog tour for Cub coming up on Jan 6. The Center of the Universe is an ARC I had from last year and it fits this month’s Book Battle theme perfectly!

READING GOALS 2020

Okay so I’m going to let you know my goodreads goal, monthly read goal, tbr goal and the goals I have for Words & Whimsy, Book Battle and the blog!

  • Goodreads Goal: Last year I read 163/150. This year I am aiming for 165. I know it’s not a huge jump. I might end up upping it. We will see where the year goes!
  • Monthly Goal: I want to read at least 15 books a month. If I can read 15, it will put me over 165. It’s a large jump, but my work hours are getting cut from 50+ to 40, so I’ll have a lot of extra time to read!
  • TBR Goal: There are two parts to this. First, keep doing my TBR posts every Sunday. Next, I want to read 20 books off my tbr this year. It’s currently sitting at 1958. I’d also love to get it below 1800 – by deleting and reading! I guess that’s three parts. Oops.
  • Words & Whimsy: I want to get back into author chats! This year was rough with illnesses and childcare, so it was hard to make a lot of chats. I would love to be on camera more and talk to our amazing authors! We did close to 50 chats in 2019 and I think we have eight lined up for January! We are going to be stacked this year and I can’t wait to see who we get to meet! I also am going to be more diligent in posting my Convince Me and any other posts I need to do! No more slacking this year!
  • Book Battle: I want to find the best recs possible for our criteria! Part of that will be upping my read count so I can find more books to fit instead of blindly throwing out recs! I also want to get better about doing my daily discussion questions!
  • Mithah Reads: This has been a learning experience, for sure! I have loved navigating the new world of blogging. I’ve learned so much. There’s a few things I want to do. I want to get invited to more blog tours! They have been so fun and I love doing them. I also want to up my follower count to 150+. I am at 52 followers right now and I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH! I never thought this many people would care what I say about books! Your support means everything. I also want to improve my reviewing skills. I plan to watch youtube videos and read other blogs to see how I can improve my craft to bring you the best reviews I can! Lastly, I am going to try to post/schedule posts at least every other day. I love blogging and want to be way more active!
  • Other goals: I want to keep up with my reading planner. I’m using the 2020 Owlcrate planner! I love it and even bought an extra! Once I get the hang of all this, I may even start trying to get into bookstagramming! I really only read ebooks, so I’ll have to figure out how to make cute pics with a Kindle, so we will see what happens.

What are your reading goals for 2020? Or personal goals? Have you set your Goodreads challenge? Follow me on Goodreads here so we can cheer each other on!

I can’t wait to get to know you more this year! Let me know what your first book of 2020 is in the comments below!

My top 5 reads of 2019!

I cannot believe it is the last day of the year! What?! This year has flown by. I’m noticing the years are going faster since I joined book battle and since having Mylzs!

Here I am going to tell you my top reads of 2019. There were some great ones!

Let’s dive right in.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House was my top read of the year! Yes, Leigh is my most favorite, but man this book was good. It was dark, it was creepy, there was romance. Let me tell ya, I’m ready to go to Hell! In book 2, that is.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

Next up is The Grace Year. Such a powerful read. The ending left me sobbing and hoping for a brighter future.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

So Verity was my first CoHo book and honestly, I’m not sure I want to read her others! I know this wasn’t her normal genre, but it was SO.GOOD. I was thinking about the ending for weeks after.

Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young

Girl power seemed to be a theme with me this year. I think because I have found some amazing friends in Words & Whimsy! This was another powerful tale of what happens when girls stick together.

Over the Top by JVN

Last but certainly not least, is Over the Top. I love JVN. He’s a self care QUEEN. I loved learning from him and learning about him. Still hoping he’ll be my bff one day.

Well guys, there’s my top 5! What were your top 5 reads this year? Did you like any of these? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to discuss!

The Grace Year ARC Review

  • Title: The Grace Year
  • Author: Kim Liggett
  • Publisher: Wednesday Books
  • Publish Date: October 8, 2019
  • Book Form: E-ARC
  • Pages: 416
  • Genre: YA, Sci-FI, Dystopian
  • Dates Read: Nov 23 – Nov 27
  • Rating: ★★★★★

Thank you to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

A speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Optioned by Universal and Elizabeth Banks to be a major motion picture!

SURVIVE THE YEAR.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

– Goodreads

Oh man. This book. Top 5 reads of 2019 for sure. It blew me away with all the emotions and feels and I just loved it. I have recommended it to everyone.

The Grace Year was a beautiful, tragic and desperate tale of female empowerment and fighting back when you know the way you are living is wrong.

Each year when girls turn 16, they are released in the wild to let out their ‘magic’. They only have each other and have to find a way to live this long, long year. The girls’ magic makes men do terrible things – or so they say. Not all the girls will make it home alive, and those that do are forever changed.

This is a story about sticking together, building women up, and the knowledge that female friendships are the strongest bonds. The girls went through a lot during their Grace Year. They were tricked, manipulated, turned against one another. No one expected them to turn toward each other. Bit by bit they try to change the way of life and make it better for their future girls.

There was romance involved, but it was really the backdrop. The story had twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. The ending had twist after twist after twist. It was wrapped up in a beautifully tragic way.

There is no happy ending here, however, there is hope that there might one day be.

I recommend every girl and woman read this. It really rings true in times like these.

Until next time…

Ekk here we are again! A week later!

I think this month I’ll try to read two from this list. I’ll aim to read Grey by EL James and Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen!

I was doing so well on posting, then vanished. I’m sorry! My son was sick, I got the stomach bug (for 4 days!), and it’s the holidays. My mother-in-law is in town now! I promise I’ll get back on track with posting. I loved posting daily!

Here is where we end. I deleted 5, bringing my TBR to 1965. So a total of 23 deleted this week!

I don’t know why I had so many Christmas novel’s this post. I swear it’s not because Christmas is this week! Also I’m wondering how some of these even made it on my TBR to begin with.

It’s crazy to see how much my tastes have changed in almost 5 years. Then I was way more into chick lit and just dabbling in YA. Now I read almost exclusively YA fantasy – something that hasn’t graced my TBR yet! I was dipping my toes in with Sarah Dessen and Carolyn Mackler.

Ok, I swear, I’ll try not to post another of these until next Sunday! I have so many reviews to write – 11 I think?! But these posts are so addicting!

Have you read any of these? Do you think I should keep or toss them? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time…
