Thank you to Netgalley and Wednesday Books for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

A speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Optioned by Universal and Elizabeth Banks to be a major motion picture!

SURVIVE THE YEAR.

No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden.

In Garner County, girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, to drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.

Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for a chance to grab one of the girls in order to make a fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.

With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

– Goodreads

Oh man. This book. Top 5 reads of 2019 for sure. It blew me away with all the emotions and feels and I just loved it. I have recommended it to everyone.

The Grace Year was a beautiful, tragic and desperate tale of female empowerment and fighting back when you know the way you are living is wrong.

Each year when girls turn 16, they are released in the wild to let out their ‘magic’. They only have each other and have to find a way to live this long, long year. The girls’ magic makes men do terrible things – or so they say. Not all the girls will make it home alive, and those that do are forever changed.

This is a story about sticking together, building women up, and the knowledge that female friendships are the strongest bonds. The girls went through a lot during their Grace Year. They were tricked, manipulated, turned against one another. No one expected them to turn toward each other. Bit by bit they try to change the way of life and make it better for their future girls.

There was romance involved, but it was really the backdrop. The story had twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. The ending had twist after twist after twist. It was wrapped up in a beautifully tragic way.

There is no happy ending here, however, there is hope that there might one day be.

I recommend every girl and woman read this. It really rings true in times like these.

Until next time…

Ekk here we are again! A week later!

When last we left off, my TBR was at 1964. We are now at 1961 somehow. I did read one of the books I kept, but the numbers aren’t adding up. Who knows, man. I did read The Irish Christmas by Melody Carlson which was a keep but maybe should have been a delete. Oops lol.

Here are the next 10 on my TBR. Let’s see where we end up.

Well, I still can’t figure out how my count got messed up. But we are ending at 1956! This was half and half, 5 keep and 5 delete. There are a lot of adult novels, so I’m not sure when I’ll get to those.

I think this month I’ll try to read two from this list. I’ll aim to read Grey by EL James and Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen!

I was doing so well on posting, then vanished. I’m sorry! My son was sick, I got the stomach bug (for 4 days!), and it’s the holidays. My mother-in-law is in town now! I promise I’ll get back on track with posting. I loved posting daily!

Down the TBR Part 4!

Okay guys, I swear this is the last one this week! But I said I’d do them every Sunday, and it’s Sunday soo…

After this you can expect a ton of reviews! I’ve read some great and not-so-great books lately, so I’m excited to share my feelings with you over this holiday season!

Today my TBR is starting at 1970. So far I’ve cleared 18 books from my TBR. Not bad for a week! Here’s the next 10!

Christmas in my Heart by Joe Wheeler

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: A book of 14 Christmas stories. Not much info about any of them, but going by the cover, I’m not into it.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Vegan, Virgin, Valentine by Carolyn Mackler

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: YA contemporary. Sounds super cute!

  • Thoughts: Christmas story that includes deception and secrets. I can get behind this!
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

The Gift of Christmas Present by Melody Carlson

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: What’s with all the Christmas books in June? Ok so this girl finds out she’s adopted and goes searching for her bio family. Seems too adult/chick-lit for me.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Summer Breeze by Catherine Palmer and Gary Chapman

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Christian fiction about a marriage breaking down after one spouse gets jealous of the other’s attention after they are diagnosed with Diabetes. Yeah, I think I’ll pass.

  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Summer romance in YA form. I love it.

  • Keep or Delete: Delete.

Hello, Darkness by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Thriller, killing, kidnapping. All the workings for a good book! I hope all of Sandra’s books live up to the hype I have!
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Here is where we end. I deleted 5, bringing my TBR to 1965. So a total of 23 deleted this week!

I don’t know why I had so many Christmas novel’s this post. I swear it’s not because Christmas is this week! Also I’m wondering how some of these even made it on my TBR to begin with.

It’s crazy to see how much my tastes have changed in almost 5 years. Then I was way more into chick lit and just dabbling in YA. Now I read almost exclusively YA fantasy – something that hasn’t graced my TBR yet! I was dipping my toes in with Sarah Dessen and Carolyn Mackler.

Ok, I swear, I’ll try not to post another of these until next Sunday! I have so many reviews to write – 11 I think?! But these posts are so addicting!

Have you read any of these? Do you think I should keep or toss them? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time…

Down the TBR Part 3!

I just really love these posts. I know I’ve said it before, but it’s just so calming to clear out this list. I even think my friend, Erin, is going to join in on the fun!

I was going to do a review today, I really was. But after work, I just was too tired to think about a review. I just wanted something simple and fun, so here we are!

My TBR is starting at 1976. Let’s see where we end up!

Grey by EL James

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Yep. I read all the 50 Shades books, so obviously this one is on the list. I mean, yeah, I’ll keep. Guilty pleasure?
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

While My Sister Sleeps by Barbara Delinsky

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Book about two sisters, one who suffers a heart attack and may never wake up. Seems too chick-lit for my tastes now.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: This is like a chick-lit, cozy mystery mix. She is trying to help her dead aunt find a necklace. Just doesn’t seem all that interesting to me.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Body of Evidence by Patricia Cornwell

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Yes yes yes. Keep the crime novels coming my way. I read the first in this series and loved it so I’m good with continuing!
  • Keep or Delete: Keep!

High Water by Lynn Hightower

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Mystery book about a borderline(?) abusive father who might have killed the mom – until he turns up dead too. I’m into it.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

The Drowning Tree by Carol Goodman

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: This is another mystery, but the synopsis isn’t sticking out to me. I think I’ll let this one go.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

There’s No Place Like Here by Cecelia Ahern

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Ugh I don’t know about this one. At first it’s like, yes this girl finds missing people and I’m here for it. Then she disappears and ends up in some weird place all missing people go? That does not sound right up my alley.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete. I feel like I’d love the looking for people but absolutely hate the missing people place.

Let It Rain Coffee by Angie Cruz

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Plus for Latina author, but unfortunately the synopsis seemed too chick-lit for me. I just don’t do happy books well, apparently.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Serial killer. Cops try to find him. Victim’s family wants to take justice themselves. Sign me up please, ma’am.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep.

Meet Me at Emotional Baggage Claim by Lisa Scottoline

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Ok, there’s a cute dog on the cover so I already feel like this isn’t for me. I’m not a cute-dog-on-the-cover kinda girl. It looks like maybe a chick-lit book of short stories. No thanks.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Ok, so to recap. I kept 4 books and deleted 6. That brings my TBR to 1970. Making progress, guys!

My most surprising keep was High Water. Based on the cover I thought for sure it’d be a delete. I also learned I’m not into chick lit or happy books, but I’m very into murder. Who knew?!

Down the TBR Part 2!

Ok, I was super excited to do the first installment of this series. I got done, felt so accomplished, and just wanted to keep going! I feel like this is going to be a great way for me to clear out all this stuff I have clogging up my list so it can be functional!

Also, I know it isn’t Sunday. I had this post all done and ready to go, but my kid got tubes in his ear today (Thursday) and I just don’t have it in me to do another post. I’m tired, he’s tired. We’re just ready for bed. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite posts though, so you may see a lot more of them. Let’s dive right in!

Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: I’ve heard alot about Sherrilyn Kenyon. I was kind of immediately turned off by the fact the MC was 14. I feel like I’m just too old for that. The friends trying to kill him sounds great, then it just kind of goes downhill for me.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Face of Betrayal by Lis Wiehl

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Crime novel. Features an FBI agent. Count me in!
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Burning Alive by Shannon K. Butcher

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Paranormal romance. Boy and girl come together to fight off darkness. Feels very meh.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: My mom is a huge Sophie fan, and we don’t really like the same books. Right off the bat I’m having reservations. After reading synopsis/reviews, doesn’t seem like my cup of tea.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete.

Sunny Chandler’s Return by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: I must have added this one because of my mom too. Okay, but this sounds kind of good, and steamy. So why not?
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Tough Customer by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Ok, another Sandra Brown. Completely different from the one above. This sounds like a crime/stalker novel so I’m all in.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep.

44 Charles Street by Danielle Steel

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Reading the synopsis was just Eh. This was another I added because of my mom, but I think I’ll pass.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: This seems interesting. Married woman sees the one who got away and starts questioning everything.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Sandra Brown Compliation

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: The only one that strikes by fancy is the last book, Send No Flowers. So I’ll probably delete this, but add that one. So it’s a draw.
  • Keep or Delete: Draw.

Visions in White by Nora Roberts

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: I wasn’t too into the idea of four parts of a wedding planning company finding love. Just seems, I don’t know. Eh?
  • Keep or Delete: Delete.

Conclusion

My TBR today started at 1981. I kept 4 books, deleted 5, and had a draw on one – deleted the compilation but added one of the 3 back. So That brings my TBR to 1978.

I wasn’t expecting to keep any of these books, really. Except the crime one. I was surprised at how good the Sandra Brown and Emily Giffin books sounded. Hopefully they will live up to their synopsis!

Can’t wait for another edition of this with you guys!

Day Zero ARC Review!

  • Title: Day Zero
  • Author: Kelly Devos
  • Publisher: Inkyard Press
  • Publish Date: November 12, 2019
  • Book Form: E-ARC
  • Pages: 432
  • Genre: YA, Thriller, Doomsday
  • Dates Read: Nov 19 – Nov 23
  • Rating: ★★★★

Thank you to Netgalley and Inkyard Press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

If you’re going through hell…keep going.

Seventeen-year-old coder Jinx Marshall grew up spending weekends drilling with her paranoid dad for a doomsday she’s sure will never come. She’s an expert on self-heating meal rations, Krav Maga and extracting water from a barrel cactus. Now that her parents are divorced, she’s ready to relax. Her big plans include making it to level 99 in her favorite MMORPG and spending the weekend with her new hunky stepbrother, Toby.

But all that disaster training comes in handy when an explosion traps her in a burning building. Stuck leading her headstrong stepsister, MacKenna, and her precocious little brother, Charles, to safety, Jinx gets them out alive only to discover the explosion is part of a pattern of violence erupting all over the country. Even worse, Jinx’s dad stands accused of triggering the chaos.

In a desperate attempt to evade paramilitary forces and vigilantes, Jinx and her siblings find Toby and make a break for Mexico. With seemingly the whole world working against them, they’ve got to get along and search for the truth about the attacks—and about each other. But if they can survive, will there be anything left worth surviving for?

– Goodreads

Four stars for this doomsday YA adventure!

Jinx is trying to navigate life with her mom’s new husband and her new step siblings. Most important though, she’s just trying to get her guild to defeat the newest raid. This is when I knew I loved Jinx. She reminded me of me in highschool. My only thoughts were about playing WoW and I wanted to be the best! Raiding was my favorite time of the week.

The day of the raid, disaster strikes. Five of the biggest banks get blown up and her dad And stepdad are to blame. Thankfully her dad was a doomsday prepper, so she knows how to survive.

Jinx was my favorite character. Her emotions and reactions just seemed so real. Plus, she’s a female raid leader, so major points in my book. She takes care of her baby brother, who is a type 1 diabetic. It was nice to see that rep too! All of the supporting characters were great, too. I loved the relationship between Jinx and her stepsister, MacKenna.

The action was great. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. Despite the 432 pages, I got through this book pretty quickly.

I would definitely recommend. I haven’t read a ya book like this one before! It was a unique concept that had great execution. Can’t wait for book #2!

Modern Romance Review

  • Title: Modern Romance
  • Author: Aziz Ansari
  • Publisher: Penguin Press
  • Publish Date: June 16, 2015
  • Book Form: Audiobook
  • Pages: 279
  • Genre: Nonfiction, Humor
  • Dates Read: Dec 3- Dec 5
  • Rating: ★★★.5

A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s sharpest comedic voices

… For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Andrew Cherlin, Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before.

In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

– Goodreads

Modern Romance was a club read over in Book Battle this month. I was so excited this was chosen because I had been wanting to read it. Plus I love nonfic books narrated by celebrity authors, so this was perfect for me! (Those are really the only audiobooks I can get into.)

This book was not what I expected. Part of that is on me. I didn’t read the synopsis. I saw a comedian wrote a book called Modern Romance and I just assumed it was going to be funny story after funny story of his dating life. While that is part of it, it is mostly a book about his investigation into ‘modern romance’ and what makes finding that special someone so hard these days.

Now, don’t get me wrong. It was interesting. I loved seeing how technology played a part in how people date now. One part that really resonated with me was how people are so quick to leave during the ‘companionship’ stage of love. That stage where the fire is gone. Maybe you have kids, a 9-5, car note, mortgage, and more stress than ever before. Instead of leaning to your partner and trying to make it work, we look for the next best thing to get us out of our slumps. I’ve seen it happen time and time again, and it’s nice to see some science behind that!

This book really makes you look at your love life during today’s time to see what you could improve on. A few times I was like, ‘ouch. I did that while dating.’ So sorry to all my exes. I was probably a terrible girlfriend rofl.

So, Modern Love got 3.5 stars from me. I couldn’t get over my disappointment over this book not being what I expected. And like, it isn’t a bad book! It was interesting. If you read the print book there’s graphs and stuff. It just wasn’t what I wanted and the disappointment is all on me.

Songs from the Deep ARC Review

  • Title: Songs from the Deep
  • Author: Kelly Powell
  • Publisher: Margaret K. Elderry Books
  • Publish Date: November 5, 2019
  • Book Form: E-ARC
  • Pages: 320
  • Genre: YA, Fantasy, Mystery
  • Dates Read: Nov 16 – Nov 19
  • Rating: ★★★★

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

A girl searches for a killer on an island where deadly sirens lurk just beneath the waves in this gripping, atmospheric debut novel.

The sea holds many secrets.

Moira Alexander has always been fascinated by the deadly sirens who lurk along the shores of her island town. Even though their haunting songs can lure anyone to a swift and watery grave, she gets as close to them as she can, playing her violin on the edge of the enchanted sea. When a young boy is found dead on the beach, the islanders assume that he’s one of the sirens’ victims. Moira isn’t so sure.

Certain that someone has framed the boy’s death as a siren attack, Moira convinces her childhood friend, the lighthouse keeper Jude Osric, to help her find the real killer, rekindling their friendship in the process. With townspeople itching to hunt the sirens down, and their own secrets threatening to unravel their fragile new alliance, Moira and Jude must race against time to stop the killer before it’s too late—for humans and sirens alike.

– Goodreads

“Twillengyle is a place to be embraced with one arm, with a dagger ready in the other hand.”

What an atmospheric, beautifully detailed novel. Twillengyle is dark, gloomy, cold. It is the perfect backdrop to the events in a novel. A small boy is dead. Sirens are to blame. They have one champion, Moira, who knows the sirens couldn’t have done it. Will she be enough to bring them justice?

Very, very seldom do I see images in my mind as I read. Usually I’m just reading the words. The characters have voices, sure, but no faces. Nothing that makes them stick out. I could never do fan art. However, as I was reading I saw a movie playing in my mind. I could probably fan cast it. This is SO unusual for me, but I loved it!

The mystery was intriguing. I didn’t guess who did it. The ending was so shocking! All the events leading up had my guessing. My guesses were all wrong, of course.
In addition to the mystery, there was also a love interest! It was a will-they-won’t-they, which is honestly my favorite kind. I love to see the back and forth!

I would recommend this to anyone who loves mysteries or crime books. It sucks you in and you won’t want to put it down!

Down the TBR Part 1

So I saw this over at Devour Books with Dana and thought it was a perfect idea for me. My TBR dates back to 2015 and has 1988 books on it. Yep. Almost 2K. Too many. My tastes have changed a lot since 2015, so time for me to go down the TBR and see what to keep and what to delete!

So here’s what you do. Go to your Goodreads TBR shelf. Sort in ascending order. Take the first 5, 10, however many books you decide to do. Read the synopsis. Decide to keep or delete.

I have a lot, so I’ll do 10 a week, every Sunday. I will also try to fit at least one from this list in my TBR each month, starting in January! Yay for fun challenges!

The Host by Stephanie Meyer

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: 100% added this because I loved Twilight around this time period. This still sounds good, but the 620 pages are a little daunting. It would be hard to read for a book battle.
  • Keep or Delete: I’ll keep. The synopsis still sounds great.

Hungry For Your Love by Lori Perkins

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: This has super mixed reviews, but the prospect of zombie smut is somehow piquing my interests.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep – but reluctantly. I want to see what the zombie smut is about, but I’m scared this will be a DNF.

Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: This sounds like a typical teenager-turned-vampire story. Nothing in the synopsis stuck out at me and made me want to read it.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Micro by Michael Crichton and Richard Preston

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Parts of this sound great. The whole microorganisms appearing and trying to find a cure for them. But parts turn me off, like the robots, stuck in the wilderness. I don’t feel like there will be enough medicine/science/biology to keep me interested.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: This sounds like a spinoff of Supernatural. MC finds her mom dead, hot brothers save her from demon, tell her she has to join secret society to help kill demons. Not really my cup of tea anymore.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Storm of Visions by Christina Dodd

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: Eh. Sounds like a typical PNR series. Boy sees girl. Boy wants girl. Girl says no, finds out boy is paranormal, ends up saying yes. Plus there’s some bad reviews that are kind of turning me off.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete.

The Painted Man by Peter V. Brett

  • Date Added: June 26 ,2015
  • Thoughts: Adult fantasy which is so hit or miss for me. Humans battle demons in the night, hoping to not get wiped out to extinction. Three survivors decide to go beyond the magic wards to try to save humanity.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep. This is a debut novel that is striking my fancy.

Heroes of the Valley by Jonathan Stroud

  • Date Added: June 26, 2015
  • Thoughts: YA fantasy about a boy waking up a long since put to rest blood feud. Just not sounding like something I’ll want to read.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Orcs: Bad Blood by Stan Nicholls

  • Thoughts: This sounds like a spin-off to a previous series. One that I don’t feel I would be too invested in.

  • Thoughts: Paranormal romance. Both MC have the same ~sexy~ dreams of each other before meeting. They meet and have to defeat an enemy. I’m here for it.

Conclusion

I deleted 6 of 10 books, bringing my TBR to 1981. Not anywhere near manageable, but still at least 6 less. I am going to try to fit one of these into my TBR this month too, I think. I have four to choose from! Probably not The Host though. That one is so long. I’ll have to do that one over a vacay.

Also, all of my books were added June 26, 2015. Is this the day I created by GR account? Is there any way to check that? Someone let me know!

Are any of these on your TBR? Have you read any of them? Loved or hated them? Let me know in the comments below!

Until next time…
