Down the TBR Part 7!

You know guys, I’m really bad at this tbr thing. When last we left off, my TBR was at 1952. I started adding in all my arcs, and a few other books. My TBR is now at 1969. It went the wrong way! Ugh.

Anyway, let’s get this started and see if I can’t thin this out a bit.

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer

  • Thoughts: MC is a nurse. Falls in love with patient’s son.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep!

The Judge Who Stole Christmas by Randy Singer

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Judge tries to cancel Christmas and he and the city battle. Too bad it’s not a physical battle.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Alaska Twilight by Clleen Coble

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: I’m not so sure I want to read about a girl following a bear biologist around in Alaska.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Wow guys. This was the most I have deleted yet! I deleted 9/10 books! I really only kept One Perfect Gift because the MC is a nurse. I have to read it. I’ll probably save it for November/December though. Also, what was with all the Christmas books added in June? I wish I knew what I was thinking back then.

We are leaving my tbr at 1960. 8 more than last week. Here’s to hoping i won’t add any this week!

Have you read any of these books? What were your thoughts? Let me know!

The Center of the Universe ARC Review

  • Publisher: KCP Loft
  • Publish Date: April 2, 2019
  • Book Form: E-ARC
  • Pages: 506
  • Genre: YA, Mystery, Contemporary

Thank you to Netgalley and KCP Loft for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

Grace Carter’s mother — the celebrity news anchor GG Carter — is everything Grace is not. GG is a star, with a flawless wardrobe and a following of thousands, while Grace — an aspiring astrophysicist — is into stars of another kind. She and her mother have always been in different orbits. Then one day GG is just … gone. Cameras descend on their house, news shows speculate about what might have happened and Grace’s family struggles to find a new rhythm as they wait for answers. While the authorities unravel the mystery behind GG’s disappearance, Grace grows closer to her high school’s golden boy, Mylo, who has faced a black hole of his own. She also uncovers some secrets from her mother’s long-lost past. The more Grace learns, the more she wonders. Did she ever really know her mother? Was GG abducted … or did she leave? And if she left, why?

– Goodreads

I don’t know what it is with me and 500+ page books this month. First Grey, now this! After this I will read some shorter books for sure.

I’ll admit, I stalk reviews for books before I read them. I like to know what I’m getting into. I used to be scared that they influenced me into liking or not liking something I normally would. I read so many 5 star reviews for this book, but it just fell flat for me.

Gracie, the main character, was somewhat flat to me. A lot of people said she was relateable because she was normal. Sure, she was normal, but there wasn’t anything special about her. And I’m not talking about powers, or being super pretty, or anything like that. Just, nothing sticks out to me about her. I thought her best friend, Iris, and her boyfriend, Mylo, were way more interesting. I think Mylo should have his own book, but I won’t tell you why because ~spoilers~.

The Center of the Universe takes place in Canada and is written by a Canadian author, which I think is awesome! This past year I have become really good friends with some Canadians in Words & Whimsy. It was nice to read a story set in their lands! I think this is the first book set in Canada I’ve ever read.

So a little about this book. It’s 506 pages. It has 100 chapters. It’s a little intimidating. I mean, the chapters are short, which is great since I like to stop reading at the end of a chapter. However, some chapters were only half a page or so long, and I couldn’t really find a reason for them being there. There were also 7 space analogies in chapter 1. Yes, I counted. Yes, I thought it was a little much. Like, I understand this is a space book. I promise. That did get better throughout the book. There were less, but I still didn’t really understand them since I don’t know much about space.

However, there were some great things about this book! It did not read like a normal 500-pager. It was a quick read. I loved the mystery of why her mom was abducted. Or did she go voluntarily? Some of the descriptions were so.beautiful. Like this one –

“Mylo talked into my ear, his voice rolling and pitching like a sea made of sound…”

It’s so beautiful and romantic! Also, this book features a real astrophysicist, Dr. Elizabeth Tasker. There is even a Q&A with her in the back of the book! I love that it brought in a real astrophysicist.

So, this book got 3.5 stars from me. I felt there were a few too many space references when other things could be used. However, it was a quick read with a great mystery! I’d recommend it to anyone who likes ya mysteries and especially anyone who loves space!

First Impression Friday!

Hello everyone! I am so bummed I didn’t get to post yesterday. Wednesday morning my internet went down and they weren’t able to fix it until today! And we have no cable so there was NOTHING to do around my house. Well, for my husband and child. I got to finish The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros, so that review will be up tomorrow!

Today I’m doing a new post! I first saw this idea on Kristin Kraves Books, who got it from JW Martin! Here’s what Kristin said about the post:

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

Based on this sampling of your current read, give a few impressions and predict what you’ll think by the end.

Just so happens, I started Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith today! So here’s my first impression and prediction!

Divya Sharma is a queen. Or she is when she’s playing Reclaim the Sun, the year’s hottest online game. Divya—better known as popular streaming gamer D1V—regularly leads her #AngstArmada on quests through the game’s vast and gorgeous virtual universe. But for Divya, this is more than just a game. Out in the real world, she’s trading her rising-star status for sponsorships to help her struggling single mom pay the rent.

Gaming is basically Aaron Jericho’s entire life. Much to his mother’s frustration, Aaron has zero interest in becoming a doctor like her, and spends his free time writing games for a local developer. At least he can escape into Reclaim the Sun—and with a trillion worlds to explore, disappearing should be easy. But to his surprise, he somehow ends up on the same remote planet as celebrity gamer D1V.

At home, Divya and Aaron grapple with their problems alone, but in the game, they have each other to face infinite new worlds…and the growing legion of trolls populating them. Soon the virtual harassment seeps into reality when a group called the Vox Populi begin launching real-world doxxing campaigns, threatening Aaron’s dreams and Divya’s actual life. The online trolls think they can drive her out of the game, but everything and everyone Divya cares about is on the line…

And she isn’t going down without a fight.

Okay, so first, this is an ARC. I requested it because I have been a gamer for 15 years. Damn. I have mainly played online RPGs, so this is like me in a book. Also, what gamer hasn’t dreamed of being a top streamer? I know I have! I even streamed some WoW and Hearthstone WAY back in the day.

So I’ve just gotten finished reading chapter 1. This is a dual POV book, told from Divya and Aaron’s voices. Chapter 1 was Divya. I had so many highlights – 5! Which may not sound like much, but I don’t highlight a ton.

Divya talks about her best friend, Rebekah, and how she is big into bookstagram. So there’s a point for this book. She also names all her ships after books she has loved. Her current ship is Heart of Iron. This is by Ashley Poston, who was one of our Words & Whimsy chat authors last year! Exciting to see her get this shoutout!

Now, back to Divya. She is a gamer, who has a stream with over 100,000 viewers. And she’s female. So that’s like, the dream. Super awesome to see that rep because a majority of streamers are guys.

There were two quotes that stuck out to me. I’ll show them here, but keep in mind this is an ARC copy, and these quotes may change by the time of publication on Jan 28, 2020.

“Because that’s my life. Plenty of social notifications, but zero texts or missed calls.”
Okay, I have felt this. felt like all my friends were online but no one wanted to hang out irl. I feel you D1V!

“Hey, anonymous bro, I’m not here to be sexualized by strangers on the internet. It’s creepy ad disgusting. Can’t I just have fun without being objectified?”
Okay, I started playing WoW at the tender age of 15. I didn’t have any online gaming experience until then, and it was another world. Kind of literally. Anyway, my guild was sharing pictures left and right, and talking on ventrillo. My pictures along with my southern accent sent some guys crazy. So I also know how this feels.

So my predictions. I think this will be my first five star read of the year! I haven’t read Aaron’s pov yet, but the reviews about both pov’s are great. I’m already loving all the girl gamer rep and feel a kinship toward Divya. She’s going through alot – I’ll talk more about that in the actual review. I am so excited to get this book read. I predict I’ll finish it tomorrow!

Have you read this book yet? Did my first impression make you put it on your TBR? Let me know!

WWW Wednesday!

What did I just finish reading?

Grey by EL James

My review is posted here. Safe to say the first book of 2020 was long and disappointing.

I’m a Therapist and my Patient is Going to be the Next School Shooter by Dr. Harper

The title is a mouthful but a much better book. I thought this was a true story – it isn’t – but it was so entertaining.

What am I currently reading?

The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros

This started off iffy, but once the mystery picked up I haven’t been able to put it down.

Call Me God by Jim Clemente

Trying out nonfic audios again this year and I’m really enjoying this one! It’s the story of the DC Sniper. I am loving all the FIB Profilers in this!

What am I reading next?

Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith

This is an ARC I received that is releasing on Jan 28! I love that it features an online game and streamers!

What is your WWW Wednesday? Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? Let’s get to know each other in the comments!

Grey Review

  • Title: Grey
  • Author: EL James
  • Publisher: Vintage
  • Publish Date: June 18, 2015
  • Book Form: Ebook
  • Pages: 576
  • Genre: Romance, Erotica
  • Dates Read: Dec 31, 2019 – Jan 5, 2020
  • Rating: ★★★

Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.

Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

– Goodreads

Grey was another book that I kept from my Down the TBR posts. It’s the second one I have read, and the second one I have not been impressed with. So right now I’m 0/2 and planning to read a third, Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen, this month. I hope that one will be better!

I kept Grey because when the 50 Shades books came out, I enjoyed them. I loved being part of the hype of a hot new series. I know everyone wanted to know what was going on in Grey’s mind. Now that I know, I wish I didn’t. However, this book may be fun to read alongside 50 Shades. I think it would be cool to compare scenes and see it from both Grey and Ana’s points of view.

So back in the day, I thought Grey was hot shit. I now see again that my tastes have changed. Physically, sure, he’s probably attractive. But personality wise? Nah fam. He’s so controlling and stalker-ish. A lot of the thoughts he had about Ana and their relationship had me cringing and thinking, ‘who is this guy?! Like, just because you have money doesn’t mean you can talk/think that way!’

The first half of this book seemed to drag on forever. It was like I couldn’t get into it and I was just mad at everything Grey was. After the 50% park it picked up and I enjoyed it a lot more. I loved the emails between Grey and Ana. Honestly, if the whole book was just that, I would have loved it. I also liked seeing the flashbacks from Grey’s childhood. They didn’t really make me realize why he is the way he is, I just thought they were interesting.

This was also my first book of 2020, and it’s safe to say I was disappointed. It took me forever to read – six days! I was mad at Grey for 80% of the book. I wanted to slap Ana – and not in the way Grey does – and ask her what she is thinking being with him?!

Unfortunately, I won’t be recommending this book. Even though I loved the emails and flashbacks, it just wasn’t enough to redeem it.

Have you read Grey? What were your thoughts? Let me know in the comments!

Dr. Dan Review

  • Title: Dr. Dan
  • Author: K. Webster
  • Publisher: Independently Published
  • Publish Date: Sept 26, 2019
  • Book Form: Ebook
  • Pages: 251
  • Genre: Romance, adult, Erotica, Doctor
  • Dates Read: Dec 26 – Dec 28, 2019
  • Rating: ★★★★

Not until they get what they came for.

Love may not be a cure, but they’re going to test it anyway.vel! Blurb and cover coming soon!

– Goodreads

Oooooo-weeee. This was my first Taboo Treat. I picked this one because K. Webster had been recommended to me by my friend, Jayce. I saw this one on kindle unlimited, noticed there was a doctor in it and BAM! I got it and immediately started reading. Little did I know, this is actually the last of the Taboo Treats series. Luckily, they can all be read as stand-alones, but you get nifty little cameos from characters in the other books!

Another thing I thought of after learning this tid bit, was man. These people all live in the same town – this is one freaky place! haha, I kid. But it did make me giggle.

Now, on to the book review! I loved this book. It was a quick, steamy read. Dr. Venable – or Dr. Dan as Lauren calls him – keeps having Lauren come into the ER. She’ll get patched up and leave without a complete work up. Dr. Dan is concerned – but mostly cause he thinks Lauren is super attractive. Never mind the fact that she is 18 and he is in his 30s. There’s part of the taboo! Also, doctor-patient relationships of the physical kind are very frowned upon. But who hasn’t fantasized about a hot doctor they had?

So Dr. Dan tracks Lauren down. She finds reasons to go to the ER. Things progress and get physical. Then emotional. He loves her sass and she loves his body and the way he treats her.

Of course, this book has a HEA. You find out why Lauren keeps going to the ER. The ending was super sweet. I usually give romances a 3 star because they’re usually just -eh. Another romance. This was not the case. Dr. Dan got a whole 4 stars from me.

This was a great first endeavor into K. Webster’s world and I can’t wait to jump back in!

Have you read Dr. Dan or any of K. Webster’s other works? What would you recommend? Let me know in the comments below!

Down the TBR Part 6!

I cannot believe another week has gone by! My whole week was messed up. Honestly, it’s been that way for about 3 weeks thanks to the Holidays. But this week I will get back into the normal routine and start working toward all of the goals I have set!

We are starting the TBR off at 1959. I did the opposite of what I was supposed to do and added four books to my TBR this week.

Don’t Look Back by Amanda Quick

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Seems like a weird mix of paranormal and regency romance with crime involved? I don’t know. Seems like a lot.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

The Calhouns by Nora Roberts

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: A 3-in-1 book of romances about sisters who live in a mansion on top of a hill.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete. There wasn’t enough in any of the stories to keep me interested.

Chill Factor by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Someone is abducting women. MC may hit him with her car then be forced to ride out a blizzard with him. I’m into it.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Lethal by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Man accused of murder shows up on woman’s door step claiming she has something the FBI wants and they need to run. Eh. Not really my thing.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Where There’s Smoke by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: I thought this would be a keep cause the MC is a doctor, but then she and this guy try to take down corruption in a small town and ehhhhh.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Smoke Screen by Sandra Brown

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Another book about small town power and corruption. That just isn’t my thing.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

Johnny Angel by Danielle Steel

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Deals with the death of a son. I have a son and I know I personally wouldn’t be able to read this book.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

H.R.H. by Danielle Steel

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: A princess who is hiding her identity falls in love with a doctor in Africa. I think I would like this.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

The Things We do for Love by Kristin Hannah

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Chick Lit about a mother and daughter’s love and bond. I think my mom would like it, but it’s too adult chick-y for me.
  • Keep or Delete: Delete

The Proposal by Mary Balogh

  • Date Added: June 27, 2015
  • Thoughts: Regency romance involving a widow and war hero. I can get behind that.
  • Keep or Delete: Keep

Wow! Okay, by TBR is ending at 1952! Getting so close to being under 1900! I deleted 7, which I think may be my most yet! All of my keeps honestly surprised me, especially the Danielle Steel. If it didn’t have a doctor as an MC, I probably would have deleted it. I’m a sucker for doctors and nurses in books! I had a lot of Sandra Brown, which I know my mom really likes. I feel like she would like all of these books. It’s so crazy to see how much my tastes have changed!

Have you read any of these? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

January 2020 TBR

Hey guys! Here’s my TBR for January! I have two books off my TBR list, a libby book, some arcs and other ebooks to read!

I said I was going to try to read 15 books a month, so here is what I plan on reading! 11 are for Book Battle criteria, and four will count as freebies – if I read them before the 26th! That’s when Battle ends.

Book Battle Reads

Freebies

So far, I am only 43% into Grey. It’s one of my TBR books and my libby hold came in, so I wasn’t thinking it would be my first book of the year. So far I’m not loving it. Grey makes me aggravated with this thoughts. But I feel like I’m too far in to DNF. So a more thorough review to come when I finally finish it.

I have a blog tour coming up for Cub on Jan 6. Be sure to come back and check it out!

Halfway to the Grave was recommended to me by my friend and fellow Book Battle and Words & Whimsy modmin, Jordan. I’m excited to read it! She always gives the best recs.

My ARCs for this month are: The Weight of a Soul, Every Other Weekend, Cub, Second Star, Lost Boy, Don’t Read the Comments, The Weight of the Stars, Center of the Universe, You Too?, A Beginning at the End and Say Something.

Here are the Goodreads links to the books I plan on reading this month!

  1. The Weight of a Soul by Elizabeth Tammi
  2. Halfway to the Grave by Jeanine Frost
  3. Every Other Weekend by Abigail Johnson
  4. Cub by Cynthia L. Copeland
  5. Grey by EL James
  6. Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
  7. Second Star by JM Sullivan
  8. Lost Boy by JM Sullivan
  9. Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith
  10. The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum
  11. Center of the Universe by Ria Voros
  12. The Wives by Tarryn Fischer
  13. You Too? by Janet Gurtler
  14. A Beginning at the End by Mike Chen
  15. Say Something by Cathy Morrison

Reading goals of 2020!

Happy New Year everyone! I was going to do a WWW Wednesday post, but decided I will just share my 2020 reading goals with yall instead! I’ll still include a little summary about what I’m reading, in case anyone in curious.

Okay, so let’s get the WWW portion done!

  • What I just finished reading: Tweet Cute by Emma Lord. Omg, so I was so excited to get invited to this blog tour. The book was adorable and a great way to end the year! Look for my blog tour post on Jan 22!
  • What I am reading now: Grey by EL James. This was one of the books off my TBR list! The Libby hold came in early so this will be the first book of the year!
  • What I am reading next: The Center of the Universe by Ria Voros and Cub by Cynthia L Copeland. I have a blog tour for Cub coming up on Jan 6. The Center of the Universe is an ARC I had from last year and it fits this month’s Book Battle theme perfectly!

READING GOALS 2020

Okay so I’m going to let you know my goodreads goal, monthly read goal, tbr goal and the goals I have for Words & Whimsy, Book Battle and the blog!

  • Goodreads Goal: Last year I read 163/150. This year I am aiming for 165. I know it’s not a huge jump. I might end up upping it. We will see where the year goes!
  • Monthly Goal: I want to read at least 15 books a month. If I can read 15, it will put me over 165. It’s a large jump, but my work hours are getting cut from 50+ to 40, so I’ll have a lot of extra time to read!
  • TBR Goal: There are two parts to this. First, keep doing my TBR posts every Sunday. Next, I want to read 20 books off my tbr this year. It’s currently sitting at 1958. I’d also love to get it below 1800 – by deleting and reading! I guess that’s three parts. Oops.
  • Words & Whimsy: I want to get back into author chats! This year was rough with illnesses and childcare, so it was hard to make a lot of chats. I would love to be on camera more and talk to our amazing authors! We did close to 50 chats in 2019 and I think we have eight lined up for January! We are going to be stacked this year and I can’t wait to see who we get to meet! I also am going to be more diligent in posting my Convince Me and any other posts I need to do! No more slacking this year!
  • Book Battle: I want to find the best recs possible for our criteria! Part of that will be upping my read count so I can find more books to fit instead of blindly throwing out recs! I also want to get better about doing my daily discussion questions!
  • Mithah Reads: This has been a learning experience, for sure! I have loved navigating the new world of blogging. I’ve learned so much. There’s a few things I want to do. I want to get invited to more blog tours! They have been so fun and I love doing them. I also want to up my follower count to 150+. I am at 52 followers right now and I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH! I never thought this many people would care what I say about books! Your support means everything. I also want to improve my reviewing skills. I plan to watch youtube videos and read other blogs to see how I can improve my craft to bring you the best reviews I can! Lastly, I am going to try to post/schedule posts at least every other day. I love blogging and want to be way more active!
  • Other goals: I want to keep up with my reading planner. I’m using the 2020 Owlcrate planner! I love it and even bought an extra! Once I get the hang of all this, I may even start trying to get into bookstagramming! I really only read ebooks, so I’ll have to figure out how to make cute pics with a Kindle, so we will see what happens.

What are your reading goals for 2020? Or personal goals? Have you set your Goodreads challenge? Follow me on Goodreads here so we can cheer each other on!

I can’t wait to get to know you more this year! Let me know what your first book of 2020 is in the comments below!

My top 5 reads of 2019!

I cannot believe it is the last day of the year! What?! This year has flown by. I’m noticing the years are going faster since I joined book battle and since having Mylzs!

Here I am going to tell you my top reads of 2019. There were some great ones!

Let’s dive right in.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House was my top read of the year! Yes, Leigh is my most favorite, but man this book was good. It was dark, it was creepy, there was romance. Let me tell ya, I’m ready to go to Hell! In book 2, that is.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

Next up is The Grace Year. Such a powerful read. The ending left me sobbing and hoping for a brighter future.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

So Verity was my first CoHo book and honestly, I’m not sure I want to read her others! I know this wasn’t her normal genre, but it was SO.GOOD. I was thinking about the ending for weeks after.

Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young

Girl power seemed to be a theme with me this year. I think because I have found some amazing friends in Words & Whimsy! This was another powerful tale of what happens when girls stick together.

Over the Top by JVN

Last but certainly not least, is Over the Top. I love JVN. He’s a self care QUEEN. I loved learning from him and learning about him. Still hoping he’ll be my bff one day.

Well guys, there’s my top 5! What were your top 5 reads this year? Did you like any of these? Let me know in the comments below! I would love to discuss!

Until next time…
